  • Discuss the use of compasses in everyday life. What situations would indicate the need for a compass? What careers would utilize a compass on a day-to-day basis?
  • Describe how to read a compass. Do you understand the degree readings of a circle and how they relate to the cardinal and intercardinal directions?
  • Complete a compass course designed by your teacher in which you demonstrate orienteering skills. Locate a heading on a compass, travel ‘x’ number of paces to an object, create a math problem from the object, i.e. find the circumference of the tree at this location; ‘fix’ the second heading, walk ‘x’ number of paces to the next object, etc.
  • Create an orienteering course for your classmates.
