Numerous
legends, many known only to the Aboriginal people, tell how Uluru
was created in the Tjudurpa (Dreamtime). Each precipice, cave, gully,
and marking on the Rock identifies the adventures of the totems
of the ancestors. The main creation story concerns the Windulka
(mulga seed men), the Mala (plains wallabies) and Kunia (carpet
snakes) who were camped at Uluru. The Windulka invited the Mala
and Kunia to a ceremony, but the invited guests refused to accept
the invitation. The Windulka were outraged at this discourtesy and
gathered warriors to attack the Mala and Kunia. A few ancestors,
the Itjaritjari (marsupial moles), and Tatiya (little lizard) were
not involved in the trouble with the Windulka. Today, numerous sacred
sites full of Dreamtime stories recreate the beginnings of Uluru
according to Aboriginal legends.
Using a famous natural landmark from
another country as a source, identify two features and create two
Dreamtime stories attached to the natural formation. Some examples
would include Meteor Crater, AZ, Devils Tower in Wyoming,
the Grand Canyon, or the Amazon River Basin. Develop the creation
myth using basic story telling elements, describing how the natural
features of the landmark fit with the Dreamtime legend.
