With Stevie gone, Jason was faced with 2,700 miles of very lonely ocean between Hawaii and the island atoll of Tarawa, one of 33 islands that make up the Republic of Kiribati in the Central Pacific.

He was also to face the doldrums; the primary reason for attempting a southern hemisphere crossing via Central and South America some 2-years previous. For 3-weeks he pedaled 'on the spot' before punching south and west to Tarawa. As if this wasn't enough, an ocean white-tip shark made its business to repeatedly attack the boat's spinning propeller, mistaking it for a tasty meal!

Finally, after 73-days at sea and suffering from chronic salt sores, recurrent septicemia and mild schizophrenia, he arrived at Port Betio.
