Malaria Revisited

Looks like P. Vivax is back. Although not the fatal Falciparum variety this particular plasmodium can reside in one's liver indefinitely. So I'm looking to head out on the SE Asia leg here shortly to avoid missing this year's window to get over the Himalayas before winter closes in. And as long as I can treat myself on the road and keep the fever under control, I should be able to keep pedaling.

Jason, this is Kris Longrass from Dinah Beach. I had malaria 12 or 15 times over the past 25 years, including Falciparum several times. It does eventually leave your body, it took me 6 years to clear it, and the relapses are milder and milder as you go along. Problem is, you get reinfected again in another area, the strains vary every few miles and unless you stay in the same place, you can't build up imunity. Now I find it more of an irritation than a threat, providing you can get hold of pills which bite against the local strain. Doctors in Sydney and London can't help you much, the best advise is to be had from an educated doctor in situ, people who deal with the local conditions. Natalie, my lady, pulled through Falciparum without any medecine at all, the local ignorance stopped her from visiting a doctor untill she could walk again( it took about 10 days of delirious fever).
Good luck,
Kris.

jason - don't know if you'll remember me but i sold you the bike rack you used to mount your stove on moksha at the bike shop in san rafael, california. have been wondering what happened to the expedition after you left the bay area and just found out you're still going strong by viewing your akimbo programmes. just bought akimbo and was thrilled to see you there. will now be following you on a regular basis, thinking nothing but good thoughts for you on your adventure. all the best.

cheers
